Document Summary
Receptors send info to somatosensory cortex in parietal lobes. Haptics: active, explanatory aspect of touch sensation and perception: helps us avoid dropping/damaging objects. Kinesthesis: sense of bodily motion and position: receptors in muscles, joints, & tendons transmit info about movement and position of limbs. Nociception: activity of nerve pathways that respond to uncomfortable stimulation: parts of body contain nociceptors, receptors that initiate pain msgs that travel to cns. Fast fibers = sharp, immediate pain & slow fibers = chronic, dull pain. Gate control theory: explains pain experience as interaction between nerves that transmit pain msgs and those that inhibit these msgs: smaller fibers = pain & larger fibers = rubbing, pinching, tickling sensations, large fibers inhibit smaller fibers. Somatosensory cortex: registers pain sensations occurring over body surface. Anterior cingulate gyrus: influences attentional and emotional responses to pain. Area of somatosensory cortex isn"t stimulated by lost limb. Healthy nerves become hypersensitive when they lose connections.
