Document Summary
Synesthesia is where individuals experience blended perceptions, such that affected individuals might actually hear colours or feel sounds. Multimodal experiences are when multiple senses are combined to create perceptions, such as when taste and smell are combined to create a perception of flavor. Receptors under skin absorb vibrations and send the information to the somatosensory cortex in the parietal lobes of the brain, the neural region associated with your sense of touch. Sensitivity to touch, or acuity, varies across different regions of the body. Regions with high acuity, such as fingertips, can detect 2 separate but closely spaced pressure points, whereas less sensitive regions such as the lower back will perceive the same stimuli as only one pressure point. Haptics is the active, exploratory aspect of touch sensation and perception. Haptics allow us not only to identify objects, but also to avoid damaging or dropping them.
