Document Summary

Coping refers to the process used to manage demands, stress, and conflict. A common approach to a stressful situation is by taking a problem solving approach. But sometimes its better to focus on the emotional effects of a stressor instead of trying to find an immediate solution to the problem. In some cases, problem-focused coping and emotion-focused coping are used to deal with a stressor, but not all coping techniques actually help; some may simply replace one problem with another. Positive psychology uses scientific methods to study human strengths and potential. This research has identified one of the most powerful tools for coping and its also one of the simplest: focusing on positive emotions. Positive emotions can affect how we perceive and think about the world. A negative mood narrows your focus of attention to a small part of the environment, and a positive mood expands our attention.
