Personality
Personality= enduring set of
internally based characteristics that
serves to produce uniqueness and
consistency in the expressions of a
persons thoughts and behaviours
Personality traits= internally based
characteristics
Degree of consistency= Stefan’s
consistently being romantic throughout his relationship
The Psychodynamic Perspectives
First in studies on Hysteria
Assumes that the expression of personality is motivated by internal processes and
conflicts over which individuals have little or no consciousness awareness and
consequently limited personal control
Freud began it then Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Karen horney (placed more emphasis on
social relationships and conscious awareness to understand personality)
Freud’s Psychoanalytic Perspective
Was a doctor, focused on hysteria, said it was induced by childhood trauma, wanted to
focus on the unconscious
The Conscious Mind
- mental activities that the individual is consciously
aware of
The Preconscious Mind
- Mental info that you may not be thinking about at any
given moment but can easily gain access to when
needed or remove it from your consciousness when its
not needed
- Ex. Reading tophat, someone asks who your first kiss
was, you retrieve that info
The Unconscious Mind
- Largest, most influential
- Storage facility of thoughts, feelings, memories, desires, etc.
- Must express this content or you will build up unconscious, and have hysteria
Methods to access the unconscious mind
-Hypnosis
-Free association= individual says whatever came to his or her mind without
considering how threatening it may seem
-Dream analysis: manifest content= what the dreamer remembers, the disguised
content and latent content= reflection of true feelings, needs, desires

Id, Ego, Superego
Id
- In unconscious
- In a constant state of conflict
- Core of personality
- Presented at birth, primary source driving personality
- Without external influences, operates on pleasure principle= survival needs and
primal urges like sex (Eros) and unrestrained aggression (Thanatos)
Ego
- Subdues id’s sexual and aggressive impulses to “the right time and place”
- Meets the needs of the id within the contraints of the real world
-Reality principle= the ego develops a strategy that will make it possible to meet
these instinctual needs in a manner that will satisfy the unconscious demands of the
id but in a manner that will not threaten the egos sense of self within the context of
reality at the conscious level
Superego
- Sense of right vs. wrong
- Reflects family values, laws, religious beliefs
- Regulated by ego ideal= you tell the truth and feel pride and conscience= you steal/
lie and feel shame, disapproval, guilty
