As child interacts with others, ego and superego begin to control the id. Coordinate the needs of the id with reality. Balance the pleasure-seeking impulses of the id with the morality imposed by the superego. Superego: internalizes society"s rules for right and wrong, or the conscience. We are not conscious of the operations of the id, might become consciously aware of the operations of the ego and superego the operations of the ego and superego. Freud"s defense mechanisms: protective behavior that reduces anxiety.
