The science of personality explores characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving. Behaviourists (skinner), apply principles of learning to personality. Humanistic psychologists (rogers), rebelled against freud"s psychodynamic approach. Psychodynamic: a theory by freud in which psychic energy moves among the compartments of the personality: id, ego, and superego. Psychoanalysis: treatment approach based on freud"s psychodynamic theory. Id: containing primitive drives present at birth (hunger, thirst, sex) Operates according to the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification and relief. As child interacts with others, ego and superego begin to control the id. Coordinate the needs of the id with reality. Balance the pleasure-seeking impulses of the id with the morality imposed by the superego. Superego: internalizes society"s rules for right and wrong, or the conscience. We are not conscious of the operations of the id, might become consciously aware of the operations of the ego and superego the operations of the ego and superego. Freud"s defense mechanisms: protective behavior that reduces anxiety.
