Document Summary
Puberty --- dramatic increase in sex drive. Teens: brain areas that process language, spatial relations and sensory processes are complete but brain is not fully adult. Amygdala matures earlier than frontal lobe --- risky behaviour over judgement. Teens use logic while children use heuristics. The more you know about a subject, the easier it is to learn new things about it. Kohlberg (moral reasoning) presented age groups with ethical dilemmas. He was interested not in the choices they make but the reasoning behind them: Uses probability of rewards and punishments to guide behavior (e. g. cheating is okay as long as you don"t get caught) Maintains reputation and follows the law. (sensitive to public opinion. conventional morality adds to the stability of a society, it runs the risk of being arbitrary and rigid) Follows self-chosen ethical principles. (rules are made by humans and can be flawed. But if each person follows their own standard -- chaos)
