Document Summary
Mind - the brain and its activities, including thought, emotion, and behaviour. Psychology - the scientific study of behaviour, mental processes, and brain functions. Behaviour - any actions that we can observe: early efforts to study mental processes were generally unsatisfactory because they relied on the use of introspection - a personal observation of your own thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Wilheim wundt and structuralism: wilheim wundt (1832-1920) conducted the first documented psychological experiment in his laboratory at the university of leipzig in 1879. Structuralism - an approach in which the mind is broken into the smallest elements of mental experience. Gestalt psychology: gestalt psychology - an approach that saw experience as being different from the sum of its element, breaking behaviour into components loses meaning. William james and functionalism: william james (1842-1910) emphasized the role of evolution. Functionalism - an approach that saw behaviour as purposeful and contributing to survival.
