PSY100H1 WINTER TERM TEST 1
CHAPTER 1:
Psyche soul
Logos to study
Wilhelm Wundt (1870s) combines the disciplines of philosophy and physiology
Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour, a science firmly based in empirical
research and has a broad application
oWe are solving problems every day, simple to complex problems to bring
out the successful outcome
oFor example: if someone gets hurt and needs helps; if there are more people
are around, there is less likely that the person will get helped, the less people
are around, it is more likely? Why?
Because they think other people will help that person; Im busy, is she
hurt or is she drunk? etc.
oWe cant become aware, the better we are aware of consciousness, the better
we can control our behaviour
Major Perspectives
oBiological what is popular at this time right now?
Genes splicing
oPsychoanalytic practice in the treatment
Serial killer, i.e. you love your mom so much that you are sexually
attracted to her killed your mom/ someone who looks like your mom

PSY100H1 WINTER TERM TEST 1
We have special purpose and fulfill it, have a special meaning, we have
things that animals dont possess
oCognitive psychology
Thought is so important to behaviour if you think you are bad at it,
you will likely to do badly!
Any events that can create a large emotion to us will stay/remain in
our mind i.e. having a person saying you are ugly, whether it is true
or not, it will automatically become reality
Body language and behaviours send out consciousness toward
people,
Thoughts affect behaviour; who we are, written in our thought,
written by what created the most emotion! (I.e. you are stupid, you are
ugly, etc.)
Emotion triumph logics, reality
oEvolutionary psychology
Behaviour does not leave a footprints or fossil
The Major Areas of Research
oSocial-psychology why do we have religion, what is friendship, why is it
important? What is companionship? group behaviours
oPhysiological understanding how the brain affected by drugs, substances,
etc.
oCognitive/perception how memories work, how our brain works, how
perceptions work (i.e. how hearing works), dreaming (most profound
behaviour, everybody does, cant help it, has to!)
oPersonality why are you the way you are? (Are you shy, are you out-going?),
what makes you are and who you are, could be attached with caregiver earlier
in life?
oAbnormal the study of mental illnesses, eating disorders, sexual disorders,
etc.
