Ancient egypian doctors noiced that damage to diferent brain areas led to vastly diferent impairments thus resuling in the formaion of psychology into a science ater the iniial atempt to link a brain-based injury to a change in behaviour. Science is a philosophy of knowledge that stems from two fundamental beliefs: empiricism: knowledge comes through experience. Knowledge about the world is based on careful observaion, not on common sense. Whatever we see or measure should be observable by anyone else who follows the same methods: determinism: all events are governed by lawful, cause-and-efect relaionships. Free will vs. determinism: we feel as if we are in control of out behaviour but there are compelling reasons to believe that some of our behaviours are determined through genes, brain, chemistry, and external inluences. Inluences from the ancients: philosophical insights into behaviour. Hippocrates (460-470bce) developed the worlds irst personality classiicaion scheme.
