Personality: characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling, and behaving that is unique to each individual and remains relatively consistent over time and situations. Two methods to measuring personality: ideographic and nomothetic approach. Idiographic approach: focusing on creating detailed descriptions of a specific persons unique personality characteristics. Nomothetic approach: examine personality in large groups of people, with aim of making generalizations about personality structure. Doesn"t try to understand a specific person but rather understand the factors that predict certain behaviours across people in general. Personality trait: describes a person"s habitual patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving how that person is most of the time . Traits help predict how that person will behave across a range of different situations (extroverts vs introvert behave in parties) First systematic attempt to attempt to identify all possible traits that could be used to describe an individual"s physical and psychological attributes. Attempted to identify and measure the key personality traits.
