Initiative vs. guilt: children acquire many skills and competencies in addition to emotional regulation during this stage. Initiative saying something new, expanding abilities, beginning a project. If parents does not guide emotions child may not learn emotional regulation. Brain maturation: new initiative results from myelination of the limbic system, growth of the pfc and a longer attention span, 4-5 y. o. Less tantrums, picking fights, or giggling during prayer due to advancement of the pfc. Impulse that propels someone to act comes either from a person"s own desires, or from the social context. Impaired emotional regulation signals mental imbalance: externalizing problems powerful feelings burst out uncontrollably (undercontrol) Internalizing problems fearful and withdrawn, turning distress inward (overcontrol: both are more common among 3 year olds than 5 year olds, brain maturation strengthens emotional regulation. Play: most productive and most enjoyable activity that children undertake, two kinds, pretend play child playing alone, social play when children are playing together.
