7.1 - The Components of Language: Phonology, Semantics,
Grammar, and Pragmatics
language = communication system; words and written symbols combine in
various regulated ways to produce an infinite number of messages
communicative competence = ability to convey thoughts, feelings and
intentions in organized culturally patterned way that sustains and regulates
human interactions
productive language = production of speech
receptive language = understanding speech of others
- 4 main areas in study of lang. that children learn simultaneously
1. phonology = system of sounds that a particular language uses
- phonemes = basic units of sound w/ meaning
- changing a phoneme = change in wrd meaning (ex. bat --> cat / bat
--> bit)
- rules abt putting phonemes together, making wrds, intonation, etc
- phonological rules R generative ex. "kib" has no meaning but
possible sound pattern
2. semantics = study of word meanings and combinations (phrases,
sentences)
3. grammar = structure of a lang. <-- morphology and syntax
- morphology = study of smallest units of meaning (morpheme
= pre/suffix, root word)
- syntax = how wrds R to be combined into phrases/sentences/clauses
4. pragmatics = rules that specify appropriate lang. 4 social contxts
- ex. "May I have a crayon?" VS "Gimme a crayon!"
- ex. taking turns, silent when som1 else is talking, etc.
