PSY220H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Social Proof, Jaywalking, Dental Floss
Document Summary
In western cultures, conformity is seen as bad (submission, compliance) and in eastern cultures conformity is seen as good (tolerance, maturity) Conformity a change in behaviour or belief to accord with others. Compliance conformity that involves acting in accord with social pressure while privately disagreeing (doing something without really knowing why as well as you dislike it -- in order to gain something out of it in the end) Obedience acting in accord with a direct order. Acceptance conformity that involves both acting and believing what you are doing is right in accord with social pressure (sometimes acceptance follows compliance) Scientist showed a faint light and the light appeared to move (but really it wasn"t an optical illusion called autokinetic phenonmenon). Participant asked how far they thought the light moved. Repeat this a few times and they averaged 20cm. Now do the same experiment but with fake participants (confederate) who purposely gave ridiculously low numbers.
