Heuristics- automatic thinking relies on this , rules of thumb, mental shortcuts used to make judgments. Controlled or effortful thinking: thinking that is effortful and conscious. Social cognition : how people think about the world, how people select and interpret and use info to make judgments about the world. These heuristics are easy and can help is make quick descions but can lead to errors in perceiving the world. Ex: interviewers think that they can judge a person on their future performance in job through interviews rather than more objective measures like prior education, experience ( etc ). They think they are accurate judges of someone. Ppl are more influenced by the salience of events than rather how often they occur.
