Humans are fundamentally social beingsÆkey element of social psych is that it investigates how
individuals are influenced by other people

influenced by other people. Æ interested in understanding the causes and consequences of social
interactions between individuals or groups
1. Influenced by other people i.e. aggression, altruism, intergroup relations
2. Thoughts (cognitions), feelings (affect) and behaviours Æ ultimate goal is to determine why diff
actions toward other ppl occur or do not occur i.e. conformity, helping, discrimination

4. Scientific Study Æinvolves collecting data to test predictions
Social construals Æ how individuals personally interpret or perceive a social situation
Social comparison is the process of comparing ourselves to other ppl to make judgements about the self
Mob aggression can be linked to feeling of anonymityÆ Deindividuation wherein ppl feel unaccountable
for their actions when they are in a large group (breakdown of normal inhibitory self-control)
Social psych is not just common senseÆ b/c of the overlap between intuition and soc psych ppl think
they know more than they do
Hindsight bias Æ ^ÁlvÁ]ooo}vP_VZvvÇ}Z]vlthat a known outcome was obvious
Why study Social Psychology:
1. Being an informed citizen Æ allows us to develop an informed and reasoned approach to soc
problems
2. Applying soc psychological knowledge to everyday life
3. Understanding yourself

1. Personality psychÆ study of traits/ dispositions that help explain human behaviour
2. Developmental psychÆ study age-related changes in human abilities and behaviours

4. Clinical and Counselling PsychÆ abnormal psych; ppl w/ psych or emo problems
Social cognitionÆ study of how info about ppl is processed and store (lots of overlap with cog psych)
