Document Summary
Clinical assessment is the systematic evaluation and measurement of psychological, biological and social factors in an individual presenting with a possible psychological disorder. Diagnosis is the process of determining whether the particular problem afflicting the individual meets all the criteria for a psychological disorder, as set forth in the dsm (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) The clinician begins by collecting a lot of information across a broad range of the i(cid:374)di(cid:448)idual"s fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)i(cid:374)g to dete(cid:396)(cid:373)i(cid:374)e (cid:449)he(cid:396)e the sou(cid:396)(cid:272)e of the p(cid:396)o(cid:271)le(cid:373) (cid:373)a(cid:455) lie. The focus is then narrowed by ruling out problems in some areas and concentrating on areas that seem most relevant. Three basic concepts that help determine the value of assessments: reliability, validity, standardization. Reliability is the degree to which a measurement is consistent. We expect that presenting the same symptoms to different physicians will result in similar diagnoses.
