Defining the problem and stating a hypothesis. Hypothesis: testable statement of what we predict will happen in our study, must be formulated. Choosing and implementing a method to test hypothesis. Variable: factor or characteristic that can vary within an individual or between individuals. Dependent variable: factor we are trying to predict in our study. Independent variable: factor we believe will affect the dependent variable. Operationalization: the way we measure or manipulate the variables in a study. Definitions of the variables will influence how we measure the variables. Once the data have been collected and analyzed, the researcher draws the appropriate conclusions and documents the results in a research report. Review procedures of studies done with humans to ensure benefits of the study substantially outweigh risks. Ensure certain human rights for all participants. Participants have the right to understand the nature of the research they are participating in, particularly any factors that might influence their willingness to participate.
