Schizophrenia: the disorder is characterized by an array of diverse symptoms, including extreme oddities in perception, thinking, action, sense of self, and manner of relating to others. The main symptom is a significant loss of contact with reality, referred to as psychosis. The epidemiology of schizophrenia: lifetime morbid risk of development is around 1%. Though some people are at a greater risk than others: children born to fathers that are aged 45+ have a greater risk of developing schizophrenia. People of afro-caribbean origin in the uk have a higher risk. Rates are high in western ireland and croatia, and low in papua new guinea: most cases being in late adolescence and early adulthood. Tends to occur earlier in men than in women: peak of development is 20-24. In men, the rate of diagnosis falls markedly after age 35, whereas in women it does not. In women, there is actually a rise in new cases around 40.
