Set of disorders in which ppl have trouble engaging in and enjoying sexual re- lationships w/ other ppl. Occasional problems w/ sd are common => 43% of f and 31% of m reported occasional sd. Sexual desire: the urge to engage in any type of sexual activity. Arousal phase (excitement): psych experience of arousal/pleasure and the physiological changes known as vasocongestion and myotonia. Vasocongestion: filling of blood vessels/tissues w/ blood, also known as en- gorgement. Males: erection caused by increased blood into penis" arteries & de- crease in penis" blood outflow. Females: causes clitoris to enlarge, labia to swell, and vagina to moisten. Myotonia: muscular tension; during arousal many muscles in the body may become tense. Plateau phase: excitement remains at a high & some ppl try to extent this pe- riod as long as possible before reaching orgasm. Arousal/plateau phase: tense/skin is flushed/salivation increase/nostril flares/heart pounds/heavy breathing/oblivious to external events.
