Chapter 5: anxiety is an a ective state whereby an individual feels threatened by the potential occurrence of a future negative event. Fear is a more primitive emotion and occurs in response to a real or perceived current threat. Fear is an important emotion because of the behavioral response that it elicits. This is popularly known as ight or ght: panic is very similar to fear, making these two emotional states di cult to distinguish in terms of their physiological and behavioral components. Freud was one of the earliest to focus on anxiety. The major models of anxiety today or behavioral and cognitive behavioral, although it is recognized that the causes of anxiety are complex and require an integrative understanding of biological, psychological, and interpersonal processes. It is important to note that higher cortical areas are not directly involved in the fear circuit.
