Document Summary
Chapter 6: long-term memory comparing short-term & long-term memory processes. Long-term memory (ltm): a memory mechanism that can hold large amnts of info for long periods of time. Provides archive of past events & wealth of background info. 30s ago (e. g. i just sat down") is still in stm, 30s-10yrs ago (or however far back you can remember) = ltm. Murdock jr. studied distinction between stm & ltm using serial position curve: (ps asked to recall list of words) plot of % of participants remembering each word (y- axis) against serial position of word in list (x-axis) Primacy effect: memory is better for words presented at beginning of list. Ps had time to rehearse words & transfer them to ltm. 1st word receives 100% of subject"s attention. Rundus presented list of 20 words (1word/5s) ps repeated words aloud during 5s intervals asked ps to write down as many as they could remember.
