Document Summary
Cognitive neuroscience, the study of the physiological basis of cognition. Neurons: the building blocks of the nervous system. 19th century anatomists applied special stains to brain tissue. Saw a nerve net, a continuously interconnected network. Staining techniques and microscopes couldn t see small details thus appeared to be continuous. Camillo golgi developed a staining technique that involved immersing a thin slice of brain tissue in a solution of silver nitrate. Ramon y cajal, used the golgi stain and studied tissue from the brains of newborn animals (smaller density) Saw that golgi-stained cells were individual units. Neuron doctrine, idea that individual cells transmit signals in the nervous system. Cell body contains mechanisms to keep the cell alive. Dendrites branch out from the cell body to receive signals from other neurons. Axon/nerve fibre transmits signals to other neurons. Cajal came to other conclusions about neurons. (1) there are also neurons that pick up information from the environment.
