A problem occurs when there is an obstacle between a present state and a goal and it isn t immediately obvious how to get around the obstacle. Well-defined problems, usually have a correct answer. Certain procedures, when applied correctly, will lead to a solution. Ill-defined problems, don t necessarily have one correct answer and the path to the solution is often unclear. The gestalt approach: problem solving as representation and restructuring. Problem solving was about (1) how people represent a problem in their mind and (2) how solving a problem involves a reorganization or restructuring of this representation. The success in solving a problem is influenced by how it is represented in the mind. The solution to a problem depends on how it is represented.
