Document Summary

Neurons: the building blocks of the nervous system. Cognitive neuroscience- study of the physiological basis of cognition. Neurons- cells which are the building blocks and transmission lines of the nervous system. To understand the relation between the brain and the mind need to look at the small units that make up the brain and the electrical signals that travel within them. Role is to transmit signals: receptors- there are also neurons that pick up information from the environment neurons in skin, eye, ear etc. Electrode is positioned near a neuron (recording electrode) and connected to a recording deice and to another electrode (reference electrode) located outside the tissue. Difference in charge between the 2 electrodes is displayed on an osciolloscope. Rate of neural firing intensity of stimulation magnitude of an experience (ex. brightness) When signals reach the end of the axon, a chemical called a neurotransmitter is released make it possible for signal to be transmitted across synaptic gap.
