Document Summary

Forensic and legal psychology chapter 4: criminal profiling. Profiling: the process of drawing inferences about a criminal"s personality, behaviour, motivation, and demographic characteristics based on crime scenes and other evidence. There are only about 12 fbi agents in the us who specialize in profiling. Profiling techniques used by fbi most famously applied to cases involving serial killers murderers who kill three or more people in separate events, with cooling-off period between murders. Profilers analyze crime scenes, gather information about the victims, and study both police and autopsy reports. Profiles are used to provide leads for police and to focus the efforts of investigators. Might also be used to set a trap for a criminal e. g. if the criminal targets certain demographics, the police officer might pose as the trap. In effect the profile instructs investigators to look for a particular type of person and to ignore other types of people.
