Document Summary

The what and why of goal pursuits: human needs and the self- Sdt maintains that an understanding of human motivations requires a consideration of innate psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness. Different types of goals (approach vs. avoidance, etc. ) have different behavioural and affective consequences. Sdt differentiates the contents of goals/outcomes and the regulatory processes through which the outcomes are pursued, making predictions for different contents and for different processes. Drive states, and learning what satisfied these states (hunger food) was used to predict subsequent behaviour in these states. Needs: innate psychological nutriments that are essential for ongoing psychological growth, integrity, and well-being. Starting point of sdt: humans are active, growth-oriented organisms who are naturally inclined toward integration of their psychic elements into a unified sense of self and integration of themselves into larger social structures. Drive theorists consist needs innate as well. Though sdt focuses on psychological needs rather than physiological ones.
