PSY336H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter N/A: Egocentrism
Document Summary
Self-compassion: an alternative conceptualization of a healthy attitude. Self-kindness: being kind and understanding toward oneself in instances of pain or failure rather than being harshly self-critical. Common humanity: perceiving one"s experiences as part of a larger human experience rather than seeing them as separating and isolating. Mindfulness: holding painful thoughts and feelings in balanced awareness rather than over-identifying with them, Social comparison is a part of our self-esteem. High self-esteem can have negative aspects, such as seeing the negative in others to evaluate the self more fondly, being egotistical, etc. Self-compassion involves being touched by and open to one"s own suffering, not avoiding or disconnecting from it, generating the desire to alleviate one"s suffering and to heal oneself with kindness. Also involves offering non-judgemental understanding to one"s pain, inadequacies, and failures. Entails forgiving one"s failings, and respecting oneself as a fully human (therefore flawed) being.
