Document Summary

Entire nervous system is involved in motion. Term motor system" usually only reserved for parts of the system that most directly take part in producing movement and for spinal neural circuits to issue commands to muscles via peripheral nerves. Four general regions of the neocortex produce our skilled movements. Posterior sensory regions of the cortex specify movement goals and send information to the prefrontal cortex by a number of routes. Indirect routes through the temporal cortex are used for movements requiring conscious control. Instructions travel from the prefrontal cortex, which generates plans for movements, to the premotor cortex to the primary motor cortex. Premotor cortex (brodmann"s area 6, which includes a ventral region and a dorsal region called the supplementary motor cortex) Premotor cortex contain a repertoire of movements (a lexicon) that allows it to recognize the movement of others and select similar or different actions. Primary motor cortex ( m1, or brodmann"s area 4)
