Chapter 9: Top performance throughout empowerment, teamwork, and communication
Empowerment: giving employees shared authority, responsibility, and decision making with their
managers
Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) benefit employees by giving them ownership
stakes in their companies. Employees are motivated to work harder and smarter because
they share in their firm’s financial success. In an ASOP, the company holds stock for the
benefit of the employees. Stock options give employees a chance to own the stock
themselves if they exercise, or use, their options by purchasing the stock
Teams
Team: group of people with certain skills who share a common purpose, approach, and
performance goals
Work teams: relatively permanent groups of employees with complementary skills who
perform the day-to-day work of organizations
Ex: workers involved in assembling and packaging cupcakes
Problem-solving teams: temporary combination of workers who gather to solve a
specific problem and then disband

problem that arises, problem-solving teams have specific missions
