Chapter 9: Top performance throughout empowerment, teamwork, and communication
●Empowerment: giving employees shared authority, responsibility, and decision making with their
managers
○Employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) benefit employees by giving them ownership
stakes in their companies. Employees are motivated to work harder and smarter because
they share in their firm’s financial success. In an ASOP, the company holds stock for the
benefit of the employees. Stock options give employees a chance to own the stock
themselves if they exercise, or use, their options by purchasing the stock
●Teams
○Team: group of people with certain skills who share a common purpose, approach, and
performance goals
○Work teams: relatively permanent groups of employees with complementary skills who
perform the day-to-day work of organizations
■Ex: workers involved in assembling and packaging cupcakes
○Problem-solving teams: temporary combination of workers who gather to solve a
specific problem and then disband
■While work teams are permanent groups designed to handle any business
problem that arises, problem-solving teams have specific missions
○Self-managed team: work team that has the authority to decide how its member
complete their daily tasks
○Cross-functional team: team made up of members from different functions, such as
production, marketing, and finance
○Virtual teams: groups of geographically or organizationally separated co-workers who use
telecommunications and information technologies to accomplish an organizational task
■Main advantage is flexibility
●Team characteristics
○Team size
○Team level: team’s average level of ability, experience, personality, or any other factor
○Team diversity: team’s difference in ability, experience, personality, or any other factor
●Stages of team development
○Stage 1: forming: orientation period where team members get to know each other and
learn what behaviors are acceptable to the group
○Stage 2: storming: the personalities of team members begin to emerge. Conflict,
disagreement. Leader encourages participation, differences surface
○Stage 3: norming: establishment of order and cohesion. Leader helps clarify team roles,
norms, and values
○Stage 4: performing: cooperation, problem solving. Leader encourages participation and
task accomplishment
○Stage 5: adjourning: task completion. Leader brings closure and may celebrate the
team’s accomplishments
●Team cohesiveness and norms
○Team cohesiveness: extent to which team members feel attracted to the team and
motivated to remain part of it
■Feeling of unity
○Team norm: standard of conduct shared by team members that guides their behavior
●Team conflict
