Anthropocentrism: human centeredness; western philosophy is dominated by it, claims that we posses obligations to respect the environment for the sake of human well being and prosperity; obligations for future generations: animals. Peter singer and tom regan are the most famous proponents of the view that we should extend moral standing to other species of animals. According to singer, the criterion for moral standing is sentience: the capacity to feel pleasure and pain. Regan, on the other hand, moral standing should be acknowledged in all subject"s- of-a-life : that is those beings with beliefs, desires, perception, memory, emotions, etc c) Paul w taylor: claims that all living things are teleological center of life. Meaning that living things have a good of their own that they strive towards, even if they lack awareness of this fact. Challenge #1: anthropocentric thinkers deny that being alive is a sufficient condition for the possession of moral standing.
