Conceptions of deviance: clinard and meier suggested two conception of deviance: normative conception and the reactionist or relative conception , thio, taylor, schwartz: positivist perspective or a social constructionist . , and laws: folkways: everyday norms that would cause uproar if you violate. Ex rude behaviour: mores: moral norms that if violation occurs might cause more outrage, laws: strongest norm, deviance become a violation of a rule understood by the majority of the group. If minor, deviant is seen as weird but harmless . But there are something that the majority agree on, and the system serves to protect our interest against. This puts all responsibility for their actions onto them without thinking about social factors: the sociological imagination reminds us that individuals exist in a larger social system, and they impact the system just as it impacts them. The importance of theory and its relationship to research: theory help us systematically think about deviance.
