Age is related to 5 distinct aspects that contribute to differences in depression between age groups maturity, decline, life cycle, generation, and survival. People mature with age: lower crime rates, safer habits, more orderly life-style, greater satisfaction, and more positive self-image. Rate themselves as more satisfied with life, less emotional and nervous, greater satisfaction with their jobs. Many physical problems that accumulate also compound. Many physical and mental abilities hold roughly stable throughout most of the adult years but erode at a slowly accelerating rate to produce substantial declines beyond age 70. Incidence and prevalence of chronic disease increase an accelerating rate with age. Dysfunctions interfere with performance of daily activities.
