Power: the ability of an individual or a group to impose its will on others, even if they resist. Authority: the power of a group is widely recognized as legitimate. Authorities: people who occupy the command posts of institutions. Social movements: formed when power flows to non-authorities. Max weber: (1) traditional authority (2) legal-rational authority (3) charismatic authority. Often emerges during political revolution; inspired by a god. Its use by authorities is a sign of weakness. State: a set of institutions that formulate & carry out a country"s laws, policies, & binding regulations. Ultimate: legitimately uses force to maintain order. Executive branch of the state = government. Initiate policies, propose laws, & see that they are enforced. Legislature = all the people elected to parliament. Enforces the law & protect the state when security is jeopardized. Civil society: also exercises control over the state. Normal democratic politics is about compromise & accommodation of all group interests.
