Document Summary

Bill 101 made french the language of public administration. Allophones = children with neither english nor french background. Schools accomplish 2 main tasks: homogenizing & sorting. Before the rise of protestantism, priests held a virtual monopoly on literacy. Education replaced training of families & religion with a centralized & rationalized system. Effective mass education was achieved only through laws that made attendance compulsory. Educational achievement: the knowledge or skills that an individual acquires. I. e. - educational attainment: the number of years of schooling successfully completed. Lower rates of unemployment were associated with more education. Grade inflation- an attitude of entitlement among the current generation of students. Students come to university with the orientation of consumers who expect to receive good grades in exchange for paying tuition. Gives weaker students a false sense of their competence. Schools" goals: from the promotion of excellence to keeping more students in the education system for a longer time.
