Deviance: any behaviour/physical appearance that is socially challenged and/or condemned because it departs from the norms & expectations of some group. Norms: rules & expectations for the way people are supposed to behave, feel, and appear in a particular social situation. X the individual who violates norms per se. But the social group"s response that ultimately determines whether a behaviour is deviant. Studies the context under which something is deemed deviant. Durkheim: deviance = acts that offend collective sentiments. Will be present even in a community of saints . Even in a seemingly perfect society, acts that most persons would view as insignificant may be treated as crimes. Analogous to the perfect & upright person. Ritual of identifying a wrongdoing & determining a punishment is an emotional experiences that gives the identity as a group. Claim makers: articulate & promote claims, tend to gain in some way if the targeted audience accepts their claims as true.
