Why was Jesus Killed? - Borg  Death and purpose, salvific: saving significance, fulfillment of his and God’s purpose  Came for death (Jesus saw purpose tis way according to present gospel forms)  Mark: “must” -> necessity, speak of death in advance and see as something that had to happen (+Luke)  Understanding of Jesus  S death central to letters of Paul  Borg see as Jesus seeing his death as salvific, Wright see as post- Easter product of early Chrstian community  Borg see death as central to messianic vocation and purpose, climactic kingdom action…  Wright skeptical of tracing it back to Jesus himself  Traces in gospels indicate disciples shocked and shattered by Jesus’s death, passion predictinos in Mark as post-Easter… Hebrew Bible passages generally as prophecy historicized than prediction fulfilled, (while Borg see Jesus saw his death as accomplishment, final battle… atone) Wright believe rash to sa what people in diff culture and time could and could not think  Believe in notion of death having atoning effect present in Jewish time during Jessuss, but not about Jesus believing about self… see as unattractive notion to Jesus (as Christian, want Jesus attractive)  Could accept only if strong historical evidence  Jesus probably knew death was coming, but different to say he saw death as central to his purpose  Mark – Final Week (virtually only source)  Social prophet, teacher, no healings reported  Pharisees trap question: lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?
