Physical changes intersect with social, emotional, and intellectual changes within different ecological contexts: children"s physical health affects their academic and social lives. School are now starting to realize this and are implementing nutrition and physical activity programs from early grades. Prenatal development period: time from conception to birth. Mainly directed by genetic influences, however environment can still influence and contribute to variations in the development of an unborn child. Human zygote: cell that is formed by the inion of the sperm and ovum. Contains 1 set of 23 chromosomes from mother and another set of 23 from the father: 46 chromosomes are arranged into 23 pairs, chromosomes are composed of molecules of dna. Dna contains aprox 20,0000-25,000 genes- basic units of heredity. At birth, an infant has about 10 trillion cells each cell containing the same. 23 pairs of chromosomes as the one-cell zygote. Polygenetic traits: most human characteristics result from an interplay of multiple genes: ex. height, skin color.
