VIC101H1 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Relate, Social Comparison Theory, Phonics
Document Summary
Children learn about written language from the start. A 2 year old girl can recognize a box of cheerios - understands the concept of visual representation that symbols can stand for things: knows print carries meaning. Figuring out the written system and special functions of writing begins as soon as children are exposed to print. Children who pretend they are reading or writing understand a great deal about literacy. Before children can translate written letters or words, they learn the basic concept that print carries meaning. Around age 3, children can distinguish writing from other visual marks. 3 year olds can produce systematic and organized marks that distinguished writing from drawing: make linear marks to indicate writing while drawing marks are global and circular. Kindergarten children can identify different kinds of reading materials and why people read them: understand the function of different kinds of print.
