A focus on effort not intelligence or ability is key to success in school and in life. Young people who believe that their intelligence alone will enable them to succeed in school are often discouraged when the going gets rough. An overemphasis on intellect or talent leaves people vulnerable to failure, fearful of challenges and unwilling to remedy their short- comings. Teaching people to have a growth mind-set, which encourages a focus on effort rather than on intelligence or talent, helps make them into high achievers in school and in life. In children by praising them for their effort or persistence: telling success stories that emphasize hard work and love of learning, teaching them about the brain as a learning machine. Attributing poor performance to a lack of ability de- presses motivation more than does the belief that lack of effort is to blame.
