Many of us aspire to be good people: to do good, to be virtuous, moral and compassionate human beings. Too much empathy can cause the problem, as it can limit progress. In her paper stealing the pain of others, razack relates empathy to a (cid:498)double-edged sword: in making the other"s suffering one"s own, this suffering is occluded by the other"s obliteration(cid:499).
