All these stories center around different industries finding ways to cut ties to their workforce and travel light. One thing is certain: offering employment the steady kind, with benefits, holiday pay, a measure of security and maybe even union representation - has fallen out of economic fashion. Most of the large employers in the service sector manage their workforce as if their clerks didn"t depend on their paychecks for anything essential such as rent or child care. Service employers tend to look at their employees as children looking for a summer job - something temporary and cheap.
