Lawful variation: galton revealed the lawful properties of the variations between individuals, for any measurement taken, there is always the chance of error in the results. (because of some error in the measuring device, the observer is not always reliable, etc. : mean: the average of all the results. Taken to be the value that is closest to the true value. Deviation from this measurement is due to come sort of interfering factors or errors in measurement. #"s that are closest to the mean with occur most commonly. The frequency of extreme values will diminish rapidly as they become more extreme, until their value approaches zero. Big deviations from the mean are rare: law of errors: the deviation (i. e. errors) of a distribution of values around the mean follows a very particular pattern. Graphing the different values, you always get bell-shaped graph. = gaussian (normal) distribution (used by gauss to model errors in astronomical observations)
