Document Summary

Attitudes: peoples evaluations of various aspects of the social world. Attitude object: the thing an attitude is about (eg food, the weather) Ambivalent: attitudes that are mixed, being both positive and negative (eg chocolate cake is both good but is bad for us) Values: enduring beliefs about important aspects of life that go beyond specific situations. Values are organized along a hierarchy from those that are the most important to those that are the least important to the self. A persons values can indirectly influence their attitudes. Across cultures, there are 10 keys values, values that are positively associated are close together on the wheel. Deprivation can distort measurement of values (you value food more when you are hungry) But the 10 key values on the wheel seem to be universal. Aside from values being more general, people think hard about their attitudes and people find it difficult to articulate the reasoning behind their values.
