Dendrites: shorter branches off of the axon which receive input from the axon endings of other nerve cells. Cell membrane: a lipid bilayer that prevents the ow of ions, proteins, & other water-soluble molecules in & out of the cell. T = temperature z = valence log = logarithm. Resting potential: passive & active transport balance one another out, resulting in an average resting potential of -70mv. Action potential: a rapid de-polarization & re-polarization that occurs when the threshold potential is reached (~55mv: an all-or-none response, constant amplitude of ~100mv above resting, constant time course of ~1ms, hyper-polarization: inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (ipsps) Always returns back to normal resting potential. Help to control the consumption of energy in the brain.
