Chapter 1: the nature and scope of environmental psychology. What is environmental psychology: environmental psychology: person-environment transactions. Individuals change the environment: experiences and behaviour are changed by the environment, aimed at improving relationship with natural environment. Theory: provides directions towards solutions (i. e. coherent framework) Search findings: knowledge gained from research--- guides future studies, corrects misconceptions, etc: practical applications. First used the term environmental psych and recognized that the environment can affect people without their knowing. Advocated representative design: idea that research designs should include a wider array of environmental stimuli that represent the real world. Lens model: see later: kurt lewin, 1940"s. Idea of action research: first push in psychology that linked scientific research with active change. Had more influence on environmental psychology: roger barker, 1947. Changed name to ecological psychology (not nature human ecology) Studied behaviour settings: small, ecological units enclosing everyday human behaviour (social rules and physical-spatial aspects)
