A classification system allows scientist to organize, describe and relate the subject matter of their discipline whether it"s a subatomic particles, microscopic forms of life social systems or celestial bodies. Features of classifying can include form, function and purpose, and classified in many ways. Classification validity is the extent to which the principles used in classifying are effective in capturing the nature of the entity. Classification utility is the usefulness of classification scheme. Categorical: an entity is determined to be either member or not of category. Dimensional: classified entities differ in the extent to which they possess certain characteristics or properties. Achenbach: his work yielded two dimensions of problems: externalizing and internalizing problems. Externalizing problems are acting out behaviours such as yelling, showing aggression. Internalizing problems are feelings of sadness, worry, withdrawn behaviour. His work established the achenbach system of empirically based assessment (aseba) Family of empirically derived assessment tools to measure competence and problems (internalizing and externalizing) across lifespan.
