6: interdependency: social exchange: an economic model of human behaviour in which everyone seeks interactions that provide maximum rewards & minimum costs. Social life entails the mutual enhance of desirable rewards with others. Everyone seeks the best possible outcomes, so just because an interaction is pro table does mean it is good enough. Central elements of social exchange: rewards: anything within an interaction that is desirable, welcomed, & brings enjoyment or ful llment to the recipient. Judgements of what a reward is though differs for who provides the & for who receives them. Gender differences wives say they would want more emotion & affection, whereas husband say they would want more sex: costs: punishing, undesirable experience. Avoidance motivation: we sell to escape punishment & pain: avoid undesired experiences = reduce negative feelings, avoiding costs increasing rewards, pain results from failing to ful ll our avoidance goals. The most important costs are psychological burdens.
