BIOL 1111 Chapter Notes - Chapter 51: Pattern Recognition Receptor, Adaptive Immune System, Innate Immune System
Document Summary
Every organism is constantly exposed to pathogens and parasites, potentially disease causing organisms. 1st involves physical barriers that prevent the entry of pathogens. 2nd is the innate immune system inherited mechanisms that protect the body from pathogens in a non-speci c way. 3rd is the adaptive immune system, found only in vertebrates, which involves inherited mechanisms that lead tot he synthesis of molecules (antibiotics) Reaction to an infection takes minutes in the case of the innate immune system vs several days for the adaptive immune system. 1st line of defence is the body surface skin, cuticle of arthropod. Body surface forms a barrier of tight junctions between epithelial cells that keeps most parasites and pathogens from entering the body. 1st respiratory tract, ciliated cells constantly sweep the mucus with its trapped bacteria and other foreign matter into the throat. Series of generalized internal chemical, physical, and cellular reactions, that attack pathogens that passed the 1st line.
