Some algae and fungi, the whole organism consists of a single cell. Angiosperms are complex & multicellular organisms composed of many different types of cells. Cell theory cells are a basic unit of life; all organisms are composed of cells and all cells arise from pre-existing cells. Encloses other parts of a cell but is not a solid structure. Primary layer first layer; composed of polysaccharides, mostly cellulose in the form of fine fibrils. Secondary wall second layer composed primarily of lignin: only some plants have secondary walls because lignin is specialized for extra support, protection against pathogens & consumption by herbivores, and water conduction. Comprised of pits allow for the transfer of materials through cell walls. Plasmodesmata cytoplasmic connections between adjacent plant cells that pass thru pits in cell wall; allow for the movement of material from cell cell.
