The Problems – Early Adoption
• Being first to adopt a new technology is risky
o It requires businesses and individuals to invest before the economic
benefit is obvious
o If they choose a technology that does not catch on, they lose their
investment
o Even if others adopt the technology, it may have insufficient subscribers to
justify economically
The single most important idwa behind a communication service arises from its
coverage: If no one else has the service, it is useless; if everyone else has the service, it
is a necessity

• The Canadian and US governments established regulated monopolies. In Canada
it was Bell. In the US it was American Telephone and Telegram (ATT&T)
